Department of Physics organized a visit to SMS Hospital for MSC Physics students to provide some valuable knowledge regarding the use of Radio Physics in medical science. Since, the students are not much aware of Radiology, Radiography and their use in our lives. This visit proved to be helpful for them. Firstly, they were taken to the CT (Computed Tomography) Room where the patients having diseases like tumor, cancer etc is being treated. The patient is to be passed by three stages for treatment. First one is the CT scan where marking of the tumor is done via an e-mobile thermoplastic which takes the shape of patient’s body by using boiled water. After the markings, these records are observed in a Testing Room. Lastly, he/she is taken to the Accelerator Machine Room. Dr. Gurvinder informed that the whole treatment is done by X-Rays produced by the high speed electrons striking with a hard target. These X-Rays are used to treat the tumor and cancer. The Radiologist, Dr. Rajni Verma explained the negative effects of radiation and cleared all the doubts of the students. Another Accelerator Machine which produces high radiation was covered by bunkers to minimize the effect of radiation in surroundings. The students visited another X-Ray Room where they saw old machines. Moreover, they also made them aware about different career opportunities in this field. Overall, the visit was a wonderful experience for all students.
