Visit to Jantar Mantar

                          Report on Jantar Mantar visit

We the students of M.Sc. PHY (previous) visited to JANTAR MANTAR on 24 August 2017. We were there for a field visit about the instruments; which is located near City Palace and Hawa Mahal.

The main aim to go there was to know about the great history of that place and also about the astronomical values of that place.

We hire a guide there so that we get everything about that place. Then we start our visit with the guide.

This report seeks to find out about the experience built of visitors on the visit to Jantar Mantar. It is a place of great historical, astronomical and astrological values and which is in existence since 1724. It is built by Jaipur’s Maharaja Jai Singh. The purpose to build this is to record and compile all the astronomical data and further predictions of time related to the study of movement of sun, moon, and other planetary bodies.

Four more observatories were built by the same Maharaja in other parts of India. The observatory in Delhi was the first observatory built by him.

The instruments which we saw there were

• The samrat yantra:-

                                   The name means supreme. This instrument is in the shape of giant triangle which represent a sun dial .This is 70 feet in height, 114 feet in length and 10 feet thick which depicts the hours.

• The Jai Parkash Yantra:-

Its shape is a hollow hemisphere of concave surface with workings on them. This instrument is used by astrologers to make humans horoscopes.

• Rama Yantra:-

                        This Yantra consists of a pair of cylindrical structures, open to the sky, each with a pillar or pole at the centre. The role of this instrument was to track the eclipse and full moon.

• The Mishra Yantra :-

It means combination, this instrument is used to depict the time of noon of various cities across the global and Delhi’s local time. It is the only instrument which was not constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh.

• Dhruva Yantra or the pole star instrument:-

                                                                              As the name suggests this instrument is used to locate the pole star in the sky. It is situated closed to the sun dial.

• Yantra Raj in Jantar Mantar:-

                                                    This is circular in shape. There is a hole in the centre of this instrument which is the pole star and 27 degree below a line representing the latitude of Jaipur. This instrument is also known as the king of all the instruments.

• Narivalaya Yantra:-

                                  This instrument has two circular plates facing north and south. This instrument is used for indicating the hemispherical position of heavenly bodies.

We saw all these instruments and discuss about them with the guide and click some pictures and then came back to the college.

We enjoy the trip too much and the trip was too knowledgeable also. We are very thankful to our teachers to organising this educational trip for us.
