  • This course introduces students to the methods of experimental physics. 
  • Emphasis is given on laboratory techniques such as accuracy of measurements and data analysis. 
  • The concepts that are learnt in the lecture sessions are translated to the laboratory sessions thus providing a hands-on learning experience.

List of Experiments 

1.Measurements of length (or diameter) using vernier caliper, screw gauge and travelling microscope.

2.To determine the Height of a Building using a Sextant.

3.To determine Y,η and σ by Searle’s method.

4.To determine Young’s modulus by bending of beam.

5.To determine modulus of rigidity of a wire using Maxwell’s needle

6.To determine the surface tension of given liquid at room temperature using Jaeger’s method.

Essential Readings:

User manuals of the instruments are provided in the laboratory.

NOTE - Students are expected to perform all six experiments from the given list. Two experiments out of the six will be set in the examination paper.

            The duration of the Practical Examination shall be 5 hours.

 

            The distribution of marks in the practical examination will be as follows:
